Getting Ready for School

For some children, help is needed in the lead up to starting school. Often Daycare or Preschool may suggest a review of your child’s skills to help with this transition.

Help with Handwriting

Learning to form letters on the page, letter identification, writing speed, and legibility are key skills for children to learn when learning to handwrite. Natalie can support you and your child in this area.

Fine Motor Skills

How we use our hands and fingers to hold/grasp/manipulate objects is an important skill for children to learn. When children struggle in either the individual movement of each hand or in the coordination of two hands together tasks such as using scissors, holding objects, or drawing and writing can be more challenging. Fine motor tasks include using scissors, holding objects, drawing, and writing.

Coordination

For some children it is difficult to
plan their movements so they can do age appropriate activities of their choosing. This could include activities such as joining games at daycare/preschool, playing sport or playing at the local park. It is important that strategies are provided to help support children as they develop the skills they need to participate to their full potential.

Self-Care Skills

As a child grows, it is important to help them complete activities that enable them to grow in independence. These tasks could include using cutlery at meal times, doing up zippers and buttons, getting dress or mastering toileting. Natalie can develop strategies which work towards helping children grow in independence.

Play Skills

For children, play is a way that they
express themselves. It is also how they make sense of their world. For some children, they need support in learning how to play and develop play skills which helps them leap into the work of playing with others.

Social Skills

For some children, learning how to work with others comes naturally, for others though, they need support to develop these social skills. Natalie works with children to help them learn how to cooperate, work with others and respond appropriately in social settings. Children also learn how to self-regulate, so that they can learn to manage how they feel, act or respond in social settings.

Sensory Processing Skills

This is how our body processes the information coming in from the sensors in our body. This includes the senses of touch, taste, sight, smell, hearing and movement. For some children this is an area of challenge which needs some exploration in order to understand what areas are feeling overwhelming so strategies can be implemented to help reduce the impact that this has in everyday life.
